“When Harry Met Sally” is one of those classics that truly stands the test of time. It’s funny, smart, and romantic. At its heart, it’s about how friendships evolve over time. And at the middle of it all is Sally Albright, played by an ethereal Meg Ryan.
We meet Sally as a recent college grad: young, naive, and hair basically the size of New York which, coincidentally, is where she is road-tripping with Harry Burns (Billy Crystal). Most of the film is set in Manhattan, and the style of the movie reflects its modern, fast-paced location. Sally is a city gal in the late 80’s: fashionable yet comfortable, thoughtful yet casual. With an extra cup of shoulder pads for good measure. She’s like an updated version of Annie Hall, with teased hair.
Although many of her outfits I would find dated now (thats the 1980’s for ya), she fits seamlessly into her romantic New York backdrop. And Meg Ryan’s beauty is jealousy inducing. Ultimately she finds love (and style) in the city that never sleeps— I’ll have what she’s having.
Here are some pieces I think do justice to this iconic character and flawless film.
