Desperately Seeking Susan

80s fashion was bold, wild, reckless. And Madonna was one of its pioneers. In “Desperately Seeking Susan,” she faces off against Rosanna Arquette in a stylish, eccentric movie that seems to perfectly encompass this strangely stylish decade.

Think big hair. Studded boots. Red lipstick. Funky jackets. Harem pants. Beauty marks that may or may not have been painted on with eyeliner. Think the freedom and spirit of New York City. Most of all, think accessories. Chunky bangles and long necklaces. The kind of earrings you might normally pick up in a thrift store, proclaim too gaudy, and quickly replace. Rings with cubic zirconia the size of eyeballs.

These looks work for Halloween, of course. Or, if you’re one of those fearless fashion leaders like Madonna was (and, let’s face it, is), then go all out for a quick trip to CVS. Maybe pick up some more lipstick and eyeliner while you’re at it. Madonna and Rosanna Arquette always looked like they were having fun with it which, as always, is the most important part of fashion.

This jacket is probably the most iconic piece of clothing from the film. I had a hell of a time trying to find a reasonable replica of the thing, or at least something in its style. I couldn't, save for a few shoddily made DIY items. What I did find, though, were a couple of cute necklaces with the same sort of design. I think they capture the essence of the movie in an understated way.

Tease that hair and then throw it back behind a giant, puffy bow. You could even just take a strip of lace, or a scarf, and tie up your hair with that. This headband is from asos.
